Hollyrood Avenue, OakvilleA backyard garden oasis, seamlessly connecting interior spaces with the outside. Working around one of Oakville’s largest oak trees by taking direction from nature, this design is one of our most popular projects on Houzz. The linear lines of the deck and pergola transition to free-flowing organic shapes as the built environment secedes to its natural surrounds. The result is a subtle layering of material, with each reaching out to touch the other – inside carries outside with wood deck underfoot, stepping down to the interlock patio that defines the limits of the static environment, bordered by manicured lawn to mark the beginning of the living world, whose far edge of concrete curb delineates the start of a very dynamic space where carefully planned perennials yield to the unbridled majesty of raw nature. Pathways throughout the property were created using this hierarchy, alluding to the destination through the material selection alone. With the addition of a fire table and outdoor accent lighting, this backyard has become an outdoor sanctuary for any time of day or year.
Crescent Road, TorontoBringing elegance and formality to a front yard entryway. Slope properties represent unique challenges for the designer – feared by the novice, but welcomed by the master for the opportunities they afford. The sense of flow of the existing slope was maintained through the use of raised planters and retaining walls – veneered in brick to bring the presence of the house forward through material continuity. Interlock patio and walkway reach back into the property as driveway banding along the house, and up to the entrance as tiered staircase, echoing the solemnity of the brick house. The garden bed design is a showpiece of layering for form, architecture, texture and splashes of brilliant contrasting colour that delight all year round. All the myriad of finishing touches – the porch wood screening and railing, the metal staircase railing, the change of colour scheme on the house, the outdoor lighting accents – work together with the dominant elements to create a magnificent entry to a stately home.
Barraclough Boulevard, HaltonAll the right elements added the perfect finishing touches to this home, creating a stately entryway and an ethereal wood side retreat. Elaborating on a newly renovated house, the award winning landscape design for this project did what every design of merit achieves – unites the built environment with the natural world to create distinct spaces. Combined with a flawless installation by our industry leading crews, this project stands out as an example of how a landscape should be crafted. The mega-slab stone patio underfoot gives an immediate connection to the adjacent conservation woodland, while the stone veneer of the bordering seat walls marks the full transition between worlds. Within is a primeval sense of security and warmth brought by fire in a ring of stone, beyond is the ethereal sight and sound of water flowing over carved rock. Masterfully intertwined are expertly selected plants, serving as a gentle reminder that we are among a living landscape.
Ridge Landing - Oakville OntarioWith an effortless transition from inside to outdoors, a tranquil extension of this home’s living space is created. Projecting outward, the dominant overhead lines of the pergola draw people from the house into the space. An interlock patio maps the area where an outdoor Great room sits, replete with outdoor kitchen, dining area, and wood burning, stone fireplace. The free-form edge of the patio yields to nature as garden and pond, which create an idyllic scene from house and patio. The garden, grounded with all variety of texture, colour and form, peppered in key places with evergreen trees of various size and shape, then draped with a stand of birch trees that give enduring interest, receives appreciation year-round. Nestled among this turns a meandering path of water, adding a landscape element forged in the Ontario psyche. Formed with stone from the nearby landscape, this pond was crafted with care enough for green life to grow with it. The subtle flow of water, slipping through its upper limits, gives a final peace to the perfect place. Secret garden area in small yard, sense of inside extending outside, built-in kitchen look to accommodate standard bbq, wood fireplace, natural stone veneer and interlock patio, pond design required custom water filtration system
Clayhill Road, Halton (Landscape)Caribbean resort inspired carpentry has created an outdoor, poolside retreat like no other. Combining the raw beauty of stone and wood with the tranquility of flowing water, a truly unique space has been sculpted into the land where family and friends can reconnect. The backyard offers a layered distinction between the built environment and the natural world. Architectural pavilions stand stoic atop an elevated deck, sheltering outdoor dining, kitchen and bar areas. Within mere steps however this defined space quickly slips away and is replaced with the order of nature – a meandering stone patio leads you through lush gardens, delicately woven between rock waterfall, pool, firepit, and pergola, to a place where all senses are treated equally with delight. At the front, a continuity of materials and aesthetic is found in the stone walk, rock water feature and layered gardens that re-imagine this space, alluding to visitors of the magic that now surrounds this home.
Hampstead Road, OakvilleA grand entry meets the stature of the home in this project. Proceeding construction of a new house, the landscape design of this property was left with a blank canvas. It takes a seasoned design professional to realize this perfectly scaled concept from a strip of gravel. Much is at work in this design – from the subtle plays of rhythm off the lines of the house, to the variation in colour, form and texture of the plantings, to the sculpted massing of stone that flows from the building and represents the transition point from outside to within. Natural stone lends a sense of permanence as the dominant material, defining a pattern through the space as border, walkway and staircase. Artfully placed statuary and outdoor lighting provide elegant accents, while a refined water feature and specimen hydrangea trees offer focal points for the eye to embrace. Beautifully balanced garden design meets exquisite stone craftsmanship to showcase the sense of pride now evident in this home.
Normandale Crescent, North YorkA backyard space that places importance on entirely distinct elements. A tiered synthetic deck gives an easy point of access to the space from the house, and an elevated outdoor area among the trees. The hexagonal lower level deck and seat rail carve a unique footprint at ground level that allows for a rich layer of plantings to embrace it. This shape is then echoed in the shed. Accent landscape rocks, natural stone steps and flagstone walkway inset into grass ensure an unrepeatable sequence. Leading from here the visitor is enticed to the main focal point of pool, waterfall, spa and pond. In a breathtakingly original creation, all these precious features of water are combined seamlessly into one incredible element that flows together, with the curve of each edge responding to the shape of the others like giant ripples through the surface. An intricate layering of such details throughout work in harmony to shape a space crafted by masters of their arts.
Heartwood Court, MississaugaAn award winning, luxury outdoor retreat – a backyard for refined tastes. This project was crafted to form a collection of distinct, aesthetic spaces that lend themselves to replenishing the soul. Weaving the natural world into built creations so seamlessly takes both a knowledgeable eye and a skilled hand. Shaping the world around you is a level of custom elegance that requires a trusted professional to interpret your wants and transform them into something inspiring and unique. Project elements include infinity edge pool, custom spa, glass railing, flagstone patio, stone wall, garden design, pavilion, pergola, stone fireplace, outdoor kitchen with built-in barbeque, stone retaining walls, stone seat walls and outdoor lighting. Material was meticulously selected to render the most consistent experience – natural stone veneer pool edge, flagstone patio and landscape rocks, fitting naturally amongst hanging plant material and expertly fashioned wood pergola. The result of artful design and master trades, this outside area has transcended ordinary expectations to deliver a place of beauty.
Potts Terrace, Milton, OntarioThis is a great example of a smaller project that carried an incredible effect. Proving that simple in size, scale and scope does not have to be boring, this front yard entryway completely changed the perception of the house. The ample interlock path gives an easy connection from the drive, with the garden beds at its border rigidly defining this access point with a softening effect. Planting to effect in a relatively small area can be challenging for the novice, but a practiced hand can draw remarkable things from even the smallest bed. Shown here is beautiful variety of form and texture, balanced scale and proportions, a playful rhythm to engage those passing through and enduring interest through the entire year.
Woodeden Drive, MississaugaA front yard entry and backyard transformed through thoughtful, integrated design. Flagstone porch and seat wall project the presence of the house forward, giving an unambiguous point of entry. This effect is then mirrored across the driveway, in a garden design that creates a clear focal point by re-creating the proportions and ascending scale of the built addition. The re-designed garden beds that fill the remainder of the yard serve to heighten this, drawing the eye through a carefully measured scene of textures that soften edges and elaborate the space. A scripted introduction of interlock banding along the driveway maintains material continuity with the porch and home, while contrasting with the asphalt to form direct lines and a sense of motion through the space. In the backyard, separation of distinct spaces was created through the addition of built form among living garden. To this end, architectural wood privacy screens inspired by the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright were introduced as an elegant garden backdrop.
Bloor Street West, TorontoHere is a delightful example of a rooftop terrace that floats serenely above the frenzy of the city below. For this exercise in manipulation of space, the homeowners sought to create separate and distinct spaces for their condo terrace that give the effect of extending into the surrounding treetops. The design solution employed a series of custom planters, filled with a variety of plant material of complimentary texture and colour. Delicate blooms give a sense of intimacy and softness to the spaces, while interjecting trees make use of the adjacent borrowed scenery to create an ethereal feeling normally reserved for birds among the clouds. A sheer descent water feature, built as part of a custom feature wall, replaces the sounds of the city with soothing tranquility that recalls a direct connection to the natural world. The craftsmanship displayed in each of these elements allows them to act in unison, melding with that around, and yielding a very special rooftop retreat.
Lee Avenue, TorontoBringing the inside out through a sense of space and material choices. With the intent to create outdoor living spaces in the backyard of this home, the challenge here was how to both maintain consistency with the interior while adapting to the surrounds. Select elements such as frosted glass counter in the outdoor kitchen area, glass railing, and stainless gas fireplace carry refinement from the interior. Attention was paid at each step to details, whose cumulative effect will elevate or fail any project. This motivated the specification for a high-quality, outdoor rated fireplace whose increased heating area thereby extends the seasonal usability of the space. Material selection helps create both a feeling of intimacy and a connection with the outside environment through a semi-permeable barrier and tiered deck constructed in warm wood. The same principles were applied to the front, where richly layered plant material is interspersed with high quality finishing elements such as custom stainless planters and tinted concrete walkway. The resultant outdoor spaces of distinction are a product of thoughtful design.
Crofton Way, BurlingtonA unique backyard space to reflect the individual tastes of the homeowner, using every bit of a tight space to craft a serene place of leisure. With each element tailored to fit within a broader picture, a place full of play and surprise has been created. A patio and built-in outdoor kitchen adjacent to the house allow space to entertain, while resort-style relaxation meets you at every point thereafter. With a spa sheltered by a pavilion, grotto, horizontally reaching pergola, two waterfalls, a pool with beach-style access, a hidden bar behind statuary, and pool edge seating for the simple pleasure of soaking ones feet undisturbed, there is ample opportunity to lose onself to the world beyond. Indeed this was a priority with trees of significant maturity, requested for screening, craned into place. Integration with the site is complete in this design, adapting level changes to meet grading challenges while blurring the line between water and earth through an expertly crafted and placed stone retaining wall. This is now truly a place for all senses to play.
Ralston Road, BramptonOutdoor areas where one is surrounded by the peace of a garden are the perfect compliment to this home. Natural delights take a prominent position at the front entryway, where the beauty of natural stone and diverse plantings work in unison. The natural stone driveway banding, walkway, seat wall, stairs and front porch give a sense of material continuity through the space. A diverse planting scheme carries the eye through the area while softening both the building and hardscape. In the backyard, every element is directed towards celebrating the natural world. The lush, layered garden ties in with the scenery of the conservation ravine beyond, with landscape rocks placed to further connect with the surrounding landscape. Life is allowed to permeate, with planting pockets created at every turn – such as the thyme that flourishes between the flagstone of the patio. Juxtaposed textures and colours ensure interest abounds at every point in this yard. A truly beautiful outdoor space that takes full advantage of it’s opportunities.
Canonridge Circle, OakvilleAn award winning backyard space where clean, modern lines and high quality materials combine to create a striking urban retreat. An exceptional, award winning project that illustrates the possibilities when bold design and excellent craftsmanship come together. Landscape carpentry at its finest is evident in the ipe pergola, privacy screens and tiered deck. Replicating a rooftop deck, the design created a sense of openness, separation from the surrounds by height, and shared space with the trees. The custom water feature secludes the space from unwanted sounds, while the forward vented outdoor fireplace fills the area with warmth well into the fall. At night the aura is even better, with up-lighting on the water feature reflecting a sparkling array and backlighting on the surrounding honey locusts casting delicate, dappled shadows that dance across the frosted glass of the screens. Back on earth an interlock patio gives a refuge closer to home, sheltered by borders of upward reaching gardens full of delicate textures, tones and form, with one last point of pause at a zen garden.
Parkhill Drive, MiltonUnifying elements were introduced to this project, beautifully tying together the spaces accessed from the house to shape a quiet place for family. Various elements were added to heighten the visual effect of the existing pool area. A rock waterfall refocused attention, while the strong horizontal lines of an impressive pergola keeps the eye from wandering far beyond. Interest in these areas pulls the onlooker closer, to the deck to lounge and dine, towards the stone seat wall and fire pit to partake in the crackle and spark of burning wood, and to the fir seat rail to gaze up at the full sky above. At the front a cleverly situated planting island hides guest parking from view, while inset paving stones create pathways, rendering ground level line-work radiating from the entry to areas that warrant travel. Planting beds add to this sense of motion with a playful rhythm, punctuated by spectacular bursts upward. Accent lighting around the property is a last touch of finesse, bringing the outward gaze in, resting with the people who love this space.
Abbitt Crescent, HaltonThis landscape of distinction provides an ideal compliment to award winning architecture, deftly flowing from built to natural environments. By siting the building within the landscape rather than imposing it upon its surrounds the architect afforded opportunity to marry the design intent of each. The supporting mass of the lightly framed building is carried outward through the earth as a meticulously arranged armour stone slope. The ethereal feeling of vertical glass, dynamic within, is also echoed in the ground with an intense array of upward reaching, lively structured plants of abstracted form growing from its stone foundation. Points of departure from the building lead unquestioningly into the arms of a ready landscape – decks step down to patios, and patios to stone staircases that transverse the built and natural worlds. A rill, traveling elegantly from the terminus of built structures, through the terraced garden slope and into the waiting reflecting pond below, gives a deep connection between these two worlds. Only when both are weighted equally at the start can results of this calibre be attained.
Aldo Drive, MississaugaInterior living areas are drawn outside in this backyard resort, and pulled into a private, otherworldly place. Responding to challenging constraints, this backyard was formally divided into distinct areas with a strong axis line bridging between. The main portal is a ramada extending off the house, whose finishes speak to the quality found beyond. A fire table is a welcoming first destination, leading to built-in outdoor kitchen and bar clad in stone veneer. Adding a sense of enclosure from above is a pergola, whose detailing mirrors the house. The beautifully varied flagstone patio underneath unites all this, and leads the spectator to explore onward, past formal garden beds to the grand entry for the pool area. Ample flagstone steps, flanked by stone veneer pillars capped with seasonal bursts of colour, lead to the pool, interlock patio and cabana. All maintain orientation with the axis, to give a strong sense of flow throughout the space. Completing this are the bordering plantings, interceding the hardscape at some points, while standing tall with the adjacent urban forest at others.
Concession 3, Simcoe CountryThis family getaway property became a beautifully integrated recreational oasis. Surrounded by heritage farmland, the massings of plants made use of borrowed scenery beyond to blend seamlessly with the horizon. Offering a welcome respite from the sun in this open landscape, the free-form pool plays off the shape of a nearby pond. Tucked in amongst layered gardens, the interlock patio calls out to be discovered. With lounge area, dining and a covered wood burning stone fireplace just back from the waters edge, relaxation is simplified. Adjacent to this, a rock waterfall provides an attraction for sight and sound, alluding to an outcrop left intact from a coincidentally well-suited landscape. Adding to a sense of discovery is the secret boardwalk, literally carved out between rock and garden, waiting to lead the adventurous through a planting symphony of colours, shapes and sizes, to a jumping off point into the water at the base of the falls. A family playground fit within a beautiful landscape.
Lorne Avenue, BramptonThis project in the city is an award winning backyard treatment that created a garden delight. Room was given to redefine the space with plantings, allowing for beds shaped into large, sweeping areas that give a deep border of living intrigue. A sensuous variety of textures and forms greets the onlooker with countless unexpected visual surprises. This creates an engaging scene from interlock patio and tiered deck. On the patio, semi-permeable wood screening lends a sense of enclosure yet still lined with the garden. Delicate specimen trees such as Japanese maple add to this effect, and mark the entry point from the deck. Offering a place to sit and cook on two different levels, the deck is tied to the inside, but with screening from climbing vines it also directly connects with the world outside. At the space’s termination an elegant transition occurs at the environmentally conscious gravel driveway, with patio feathering out to yield the change of material, and planting pockets reaching just up the driveway’s edge to beckon visitors forth. Alpaca Drive, Richmond HillFostering a desire to bring the inside out of doors, this design meets that goal with grace and style. An elevated second floor synthetic deck easily connects the outside and wide, open views of the natural surrounds, providing a refined space for the experience. Attention to details aid this, as evident in the gentle curve and vertical punctuations of the deck’s wood deck railing. Material contrast between deck and railing mark a threshold between built and natural worlds. Descending easily to ground, the user is brought to a quite different environment in the form of outdoor lounge amid the garden. An interlock patio dictates the linear footprint of this space, where dominance of line is continued overhead in the wood pergola. A forward venting exterior stainless fireplace throws warmth into the space to recreate the indoors for most of the year, while careful material compatibility ensures this element blends seamlessly with landscape carpentry. Frosted glass screens give shelter but not isolation, and a stone veneer seat wall gives a streamlined border between planting bed and hardscape. Click Below to view the Full Gallery
Huron Heights Drive, MississaugaThis backyard project transformed an ordinary place into an extraordinary space. Creating an opportunity from the existing grading issues, a terraced patio and garden area was carefully molded into the yard. A wood pergola frames the sitting area from above, with intricate detailing on the structure setting the tone for the space. The interlock patio mass is softened with an inlaid grass pattern that meshes with the linear border material – these combine to contrast the free-flowing joints of the main patio body. The sheer descent water feature emanating from a stone veneer wall adds tranquility. Stone seat walls mark the final boundary between living and built spaces, and columnar hornbeam trees provide both screening and visual interest. The element of water and pervasiveness of plantings gives a soothing sense of cool to a sun-drenched yard, while the detailed pavilion gives a thoughtful shelter to built-in outdoor kitchen and dining area. Every element of this project serves to compliment the others, yielding a flawlessly executed project. Click Below to view the Full Gallery
Ontario Street, MiltonA remarkable backyard that harmonizes design and surface materials in a collection of distinct spaces. A modern look pervades throughout the area, achieved with clean lines and raw materials – concrete, stainless steel and glass. The division between interior and exterior is blurred with the breezeway off the house, providing a portal from home to pool and screened in pavilion. Here the owners can enjoy the amenities of the inside alongside the innate pleasures of simply being outside. When out in the open air on the patio, the pool steals all attention – bold, dramatic and uncompromising. Complimenting it perfectly is the large, pre-cast patio material and its linear patterning that create a stylish lounge. Deftly carved from the earth, the basement walkout maintains material continuity through rigid geometry, an unreserved aesthetic is applied. Uniform plantings uphold this while softening the hard edges. The patterned, pre-cast slabs underfoot in the sunken patio provides a transition of materials to the building. The resulting space gives a direct connection between private interior and ethereal outdoor spaces.
Woodeden Drive, Mississauga Custom PoolMaking excellent use of an expansive back yard, this project shows the beauty in restraint. Linear flow and a layered hierarchy of space unite to give an ethereal sense of space. The spa, with multiple sheer descents and stone veneer walls, occupies a dominant point of focus in the design but the less central access gives its users a sense of isolation among the trees. The pergola creates a very loose sense of enclosure in patterned lines overhead. The plantings, interspersed throughout the space, create distinct areas by offering screening between. As well they give an incredible variety to set the scene of the space and integrate with the towering mature trees. The linear tiers of the interlock patio offers ample room to lounge and dine in the sun within full view of the gardens, pool and spa, while giving a layered approach to the ramada and entry point of the home. The natural stone wall, caps, stairs and pool coping work with masterfully located landscape rocks to add elegance and connection to nature. Click Below to view the Full Gallery
Glenrose Avenue, Toronto, OntarioWhat would be minor improvements individually are applied with consistency to this home, achieving dramatic results. It begins at the front, where porch and steps are re-surfaced with natural stone and new colour scheme to better suit the character of the home. Stylized accents of the house, are echoed around the property in the details applied to screenings, fence and gate. In the back entry, a mere transition area is uplifted to a zen-like outdoor seating area. The patio was raised and pergola framing projected from the building to feel like the space is an extension on the house. The combination of inside luxuries such as lighting and fireplace, alongside very outdoor sensations – the breeze, the scent of plants, the babbling of water – creates a thorough sense of peace. The addition of a gazebo, refined layout of pathway and beds, privacy fence and completely re-imagined gardens carry this feeling of rejuvenation into the yard area, tying together the myriad of elements into a most thoughtfully crafted place.
